The Opportunity

We are seeking an expressive, self-directed Communications & Social Media Intern who loves art, design, and technology and excels at storytelling.

Your primary focus will be capturing and translating the vibrant ecosystem of our Capitol Hill studio, Passable, and other arts and technology activations into compelling public narratives. Passable is part makerspace, part art gallery, and part social club—so being pro-social, community-oriented, and curious about how creative things work is essential.

Role Specs & Compensation

Compensation: $21.00 per hour

Commitment: 15–20 hours per week

Duration: 3 Months (with potential to extend to 6 months)

Location: Capitol Hill, Seattle, WA / Hybrid

The Perk: Includes a full Passable studio membership. You’ll have key-holder access to our tools, 3D printers, CNC routers, electronics benches, and soldering labs as well as workshops and calls to participate in group exhibitions.

What This Role Is (and Isn’t)

• It IS heavy writing, storytelling, and community engagement: You’ll be attending events, connecting with our community, gathering stories, and crafting sharp, soulful, human prose for social media, newsletters, and local press outreach.
• It IS NOT a graphic design position: Our core brand identity and primary assets are generated internally.
• HOWEVER, you must speak design: You need the technical comfort to open Photoshop and Illustrator, manipulate existing master assets, change layouts, and cleanly reformat design files for different channels (Instagram Reels, printed flyers, email banners).

Key Responsibilities

• Multimedia Studio Documentation: Capture the raw energy of Passable. Translate hands-on workshops (soldering, cyberdeck building, wearable tech) and art installations into engaging, organic social content (Reels, TikTok, photo essays).
• Asset Adaptation & Formatting: Use Photoshop and Illustrator to slice, re-layout, and optimize master design assets across print, email, and digital dimensions.
• PR & Media Outreach: Write original press releases and local event calendar listings (The Stranger, Seattle Met, Capitol Hill Seattle Blog) to drive public engagement.
• Newsletter Strategy: Synthesize weekly updates, artist spotlights, and cross-county project milestones into a unified community newsletter.
• Audience Development: Help brainstorm and execute grassroots strategies to promote programs like our Equity & Access Memberships.

Who You Are

• A student, practitioner, or creator in Communications, PR, Journalism, Arts Administration, or a related field.
• An authentic writer with an independent voice and a deep respect for LGBTQIA+, BIPOC, and neurodivergent community spaces.
• Curious about the intersection of art and technology—you don’t need to be an engineer, but interactive projection mapping or custom micro-controllers spark your interest.
• Local or close to Capitol Hill with easy access to the physical studio space.
• Proficient enough in Adobe Creative Cloud (Photoshop/Illustrator) to resize canvases, manage layers, adjust typography, and export formats without needing a walkthrough.

Third Place Technologies is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization creating physical spaces, regional events, and collaborative learning opportunities where artists, technologists, and designers can experiment, cross boundaries, and share their work. Our ecosystem includes:

• Passable: Our flagship studio, gallery, and makerspace in Capitol Hill, Seattle.
